A tragic accident in New York City recently killed a man and injured six other people. The city is no stranger to motor vehicle accidents. It is one of the most congested cities in the country, and where traffic is dense, accidents are likely to happen.

A man from Monroe County, near Rochester, was attempting to park a minivan in Chinatown. The vehicle jumped a curb and careened into a group of people. A 56-year-old man died at the scene. Six other people were injured, two of them critically. It is believed that the 70-year-old man driving the van may have put the vehicle in reverse and stepped on the gas instead of the brake.

The driver of the vehicle was placed under arrest. He faces charges including seven counts of failure to yield to pedestrians, one count of failing to exercise due care and one count of driving on a sidewalk. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The death or critical injury of loved ones due to sudden, unforeseen motor vehicle accidents can come as a shock in New York. People burdened with such grief and sadness may not be aware of what legal recourse is available to them. While these concerns may not be at the forefront of their minds, a conversation with a personal injury attorney can help. A lawyer’s review of the facts of the accident can help determine if a civil suit against the party deemed responsible is a possible option. A successfully litigated claim can assist with medical costs, final costs and other verifiable losses.
