The holiday season is a time for visiting with friends and family in New York. People take to the highways in great numbers to make those visits happen. Sadly, the increased traffic leads to an increase in the likelihood of motor vehicle accidents. Some of the accidents that occur around the holidays are fatal.
A recent accident on Long Island resulted in the death of a couple from Suffolk County. The couple had been driving along Huguenot Drive when they were hit by a Ford Explorer. The accident happened around 10 p.m. The couple died at the scene.
The driver of the Ford Explorer fled on foot following the collision. A passenger in the Explorer was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital and treated for minor injuries. The driver was apprehended and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and he is reportedly being held in jail with bail set at $5 million. It is not known if speed or alcohol contributed to the crash. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
There is never a good time to lose loved ones in a fatal car crash. The increased numbers of motor vehicle accidents around the holidays increases one’s odds of being involved in a crash. Being injured, or worse, in a crash around the holidays is devastating to one’s family and loved ones. Nothing can undo the harm that was done, but a lawsuit in a New York civil court against the party or parties deemed responsible can provide some compensation. A successfully litigated claim can provide compensation for medical costs, final costs and other verifiable losses.
